(AP) -- A Democratic state lawmaker says he will run for Congress now that U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak is retiring.

Rep. Joel Sheltrown of West Branch announced Monday that he is running for the seat.

The only other announced Democratic candidate is Connie Saltonstall of Charlevoix, a former county commissioner.

At least four Republicans have announced their candidacy for the seat covering Michigan's Upper Peninsula and a large portion of the northern Lower Peninsula.

Stupak said last week he won't seek a 10th term in Congress.

The Tea Party Express had targeted Stupak for his role in securing House approval of the health care overhaul. Stupak says he wasn't chased from the race.
