GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- A stray firework ignited a wildfire that required the efforts of two separate fire departments, four fire trucks and one airplane, Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department Chief Patrick Parker said.
Friday afternoon, the fire broke out in a grass field along River Road.
“Well it’s pretty much a closed case. The Fire was caused by a couple of teens playing with fire works. They had a firework that went off bad and it started the grass on fire. The wind we had on Friday just took it across the field,” Parker said.
Firefighters from Blair Township and Grand Traverse Metro spent hours battling flames and heavy smoke.
One shed burnt to the ground during the fire.
“Everything is very dry right now. You have all the dead grass that is still on the surface and all it takes is a little spark to set it off,” Parker said.
The parents of the kids responsible for the fire may face a fine for more than $1,000.
