House makes Sunday night vote
Now that Congress has passed a health care overhaul, President Barack Obama is expected to sign it quickly,
They had called him a foe of his own party - democrat Bart Stupak of Michigan potentially standing in the way of passing health care reform, but today he switched to a "yes" vote.
Stupak says he has reached agreement with the White House and party leaders to make sure health care legislation does not permit the use of federal funds for elective abortions. Stupak said Sunday the agreement means he can now support a health care bill headed for a vote on the house floor Sunday night.
Six other democrats joined Stupak at a news conference, called minutes after the White House issued the text of an executive order that will carry out the agreement.
GOP lawmakers were quick to dismiss the executive order agreement by which pro-life democrats were brought on board with health care reform. several pointed to long judicial precedent which held that the law would supersede any such order, making federal funding of abortion possible, if not likely, under pending legislation.
Passage of a central health care bill already cleared by the Senate now sends it to President Obama for his signature. That still would leave one more step, a companion package of changes that would go to the Senate.
