TRAVERSE CITY -- For the fist time, Grand Traverse County Deputies will be armed with Tasers.
A training session was held at the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday afternoon.
While it is not mandatory, a couple Deputies volunteered to have the Tasers demonstrated on them.
“It will be easier for me to explain what will be forthcoming if suspects don’t comply,” said Grand Traverse County Deputy Mike Shea.
Sergeant Preston Taylor is hopeful that the Tasers will better serve the community.
“It is just a very safe, effective tool for law enforcement officers to use to help minimize injuries to the officer or the suspect when we use force,” Taylor said.
Before Deputies are allowed to carry a Taser, they must complete a 6 hour class and pass a written exam.
