It’s common to turn on the news and hear of a local hero. For most situations, you can’t put a price on what they’ve done.

But a new program may help minimize the price of a new house and it’s called Homes For Heroes.

You can’t discount what local heroes, like police officers and firefighters, do for our communities, but certain people can discount what these heroes pay for housing, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.

The risk is worth the reward. Ask everyone that serves and protects, and that'll be their stance. They'll also probably agree they get adequate gratification for what they do in the form of thanks. But if you ask Scott and Mary Jones, gratification can also come in the form of saving a few bucks.

"I think it'll definitely be helpful," said Mary Jones.

Scott Jones is in the Coast Guard. He and his wife Mary moved into a Traverse City home about four years ago, but being in the Coast Guard, he says they don't stay in the same place for a long time. Moving's tedious, it's expensive, but a new program could help bring that cost down.

"It's an exciting day for Traverse City, we are very proud to bring Homes for Heroes to the State of Michigan, this will be the first program in the state, and what we're able to do is offer discounts on home purchases and home sales to our local heroes," says Christine Stalsonburg of Homes For Heroes.

Homes For Heroes is in 20 different states, but this is the first established program in the state of Michigan. Homes For Heroes is a group of realtors, lenders, and title companies that have teamed up to discount the cost of buying or selling a home. Heroes in a community, like police, firefighters, teachers, first responders, and military, like Scott Jones, can benefit.

"It certainly is going to help us absorb some of the fees associated with moving around every few years that we experience in the Coast Guard, it's a great program, it's going to do a lot for local fire and military members," says Scott Jones.

Do so much as making being a homeowner a reality.

"For a lot of people, this discount they receive could make the difference in them purchasing or not being able to purchase a home," says Stalsonburg.

Jones says local businesses teaming together to make Homes For Heroes possible shows the support for public safety in the area.
