BENZIE COUNTY -- After three fishermen were rescued from Crystal Lake on Saturday, Benzie County Sheriff Rory Heckman is urging people to stay off the ice.
“The ice is no longer safe due to unseasonably warm temperatures,” Heckman said.
Saturday afternoon, Benzie County Emergency Dispatchers received a call from a man who had fallen through the ice.
According to police, the men were fishing on the south-side of Crystal Lake
Frankfort Fire Officials and Coast Guard personnel accessed the lake through Onkeonwe Street in Crystal Lake Township.
“When units got there, they could see the fishermen out on the ice…they were quite a ways out there,” Heckman said.
Firefighters and Coast Guard personnel successfully removed all three men from Crystal Lake. They were treated at the scene and refused any further treatment.
While tragedy was avoided on Saturday, officials want people to know that the ice in our area is quickly melting away.
