TRAVERSE CITY -- The Michigan Department of Education released the statewide results of the Fall 2009 Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests for grades 3-9 that were administered last October.

TCAPS’ student results met or exceeded the State at every grade level in the percentage of all students who met or exceeded proficiency standards in Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies MEAP tests.

In the four subject area tests, TCAPS’ results generally exceeded State results by several percentage points for students at the elementary level (grades 3-5).

The percentage of students who scored proficient in grades 6-9 exceeded State results by the following ranges by subject area:

Reading: six to nine percentage points

Math:  two to twelve points

Science:  ten to fourteen points

Social Studies: sixteen percentage points

Jame McCall, Executive Director of Elementary and Special Education, emphasized, “All of our teachers continue to focus on students’ individual progress and meet regularly to examine what is working and what can be improved in all areas of instruction including writing, reading, and mathematics. Elementary staff has engaged in extensive professional development training on research-based strategies to promote writing skills.”

McCall also noted, “In 2008-2009, TCAPS’ elementary schools implemented a new mathematics curriculum, which continues to be phased in. This has involved significant professional development for teachers, as well as resources for students and parents.

For example, when comparing TCAPS’ Math MEAP results for the 2009 sixth grade to last year’s 2008 fifth grade results, the change in the percentage of students proficient increased by 15% versus a state increase of 6.5%.”
