TRAVERSE CITY -- Robotics students from all across Michigan rocked Traverse City Central High School on Friday.
Competitors danced in the stands as robotic duels took center stage on the gym floor.
The event, FIRST Robotics District Competition, is meant to motivate students to get involved in engineering.
Students in the competition have declared robotics a sport.
“It is the only sport in high school where everybody has the chance to go pro. Unlike football and basketball, everybody has the chance to be an astronaut or engineer,” said Kevin Query, student at Traverse City Central High School.
In all, 40 schools, with hundreds of students, attended the Robotics District Competition.
Round two of the event will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The winners will advance to the state championships in April.
