Soccer benefit helps Haiti recovery
Sunday's "Futsal" benefit is sponsored by the Grand Traverse Soccer League.
Futsal is a scaled-down version of soccer that's played indoors. Teams of five players each go head-to-head for three games each and will fight for bragging rights. Futsal is played in 100 countries around the world, which is one reason organizers thought it would be a great way to support relief efforts in Haiti.
The Futsal Tournament for Haiti hit the gym floor Sunday, and proceeds go to the American Red Cross. Organizers say they raised about $2,000 for the local Red Cross chapter, and they say there is interest in forming a local Fustal league in the Traverse City area.
