ANN ARBOR -- The federal government has given a $14.8 million stimulus grant to renovate and expand the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.
U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, announced the National Institutes of Health award Thursday. His office says the institute has received $48.3 million in stimulus grants so far.
The university's Web site describes the institute as "the world's largest academic social science survey and research organization." It has an annual budget of about $80 million and has about 200 scientists from 20 fields.
Michigan's regents are considering a plan to add 50,000 square feet to the institute. Dingell says the project will create up to 200 temporary and long-term jobs.
