MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University has broken ground for a $24 million home for a medical school. It's one of three new medical schools planned in Michigan.
The Mount Pleasant university held a ceremony Thursday for a 60,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building.
University trustees voted Thursday to make it a college. Central says it's designed to meet accrediting standards of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Completion is planned for 2012, with classes to start that fall.
The University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State universities now have medical schools, and Oakland University has approval to open one next year.
Western Michigan University also seeks accreditation for a medical school.
