$17,000 In Medicine Stolen During Burglaries
TRAVERSE CITY -- A Traverse City pharmacy is boosting up security. Thousands of dollars in prescription drugs have been stolen from Medicap Pharmacy near Chum’s corner.
On December 26, 2009, a burglar broke into the Medicap Pharmacy and got away with $6,000 in prescription drugs - a not so nice Christmas present for the store owner.
Dale Maupin says “All we could think about was what they had done and how they had invaded our space.”
Wednesday morning around 2, Medicap Pharmacy was broken into again.
Maupin says "The police had the place surrounded. They let me in briefly to see what was gone. We saw glass everywhere medicine knocked down, medicine missing."
Store owner and pharmacist Dale Maupin says this time a burglar got away with about $10,000 worth of prescription drugs. Oxycontin, Adderall, and blood pressure medications are in the hands of the wrong person.
Maupin says "A very large collection of drugs are going to be hitting the street. It’s very dangerous for the community. They're stealing the medicine from people who really need it."
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. They say each time a suspect strikes the pharmacy, more evidence is collected.
Maupin says "They’re coming right through the front door, busting the glass right out."
In the meantime, Maupin is beefing up security.
Maupin says "We are boosting up more camera systems, we are moving all abusable drugs off shelves and putting them in safes, we’re doing every measure we can."
If you have any information, please call the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office. The store owner is offering $500 for information leading to an arrest.
