LANSING (AP) -- Michigan lawmakers still are exploring ways to raise more money for the state's cash-strapped parks system.
The state Senate passed a bill Wednesday that's part of a plan that would ask Michigan motorists to voluntarily pay a $10 fee when applying for or renewing their license plate annually.
The fee would exempt them from having to buy daily or annual park passes to visit state parks and recreation areas.
Supporters say the recreation passport system would raise more money for badly needed maintenance at the parks. Opponents oppose the move because they want to tap registration fees for money to fix roads and bridges.
Motorists now pay $6 for a daily pass and $24 for an annual park pass.
The bill passed the Senate 23-11 and now heads to the House.
