MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University is breaking ground for a $24 million home for a medical school.

It's one of three new medical schools planned for the state. The university holds a ceremony Feb. 18 for a 60,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building on its Mount Pleasant campus. Completion is planned for 2012.

Central says it's designed to meet the accrediting standards of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

The University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State universities now have medical schools. The accreditation board Tuesday approved the Oakland University Beaumont Hospitals medical school. It opens next year.

Western Michigan University also is seeking accreditation of a medical school.
