Wertz Warriors begin snowmobile ride
The 29th Annual Wertz Warriors Endurance Ride is underway to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes.
The snowmobile group known as the Wertz Warriors is beginning their 900 mile, 7-day ride on Sunday. It begins in Mt. Clemens and covers Northern Michigan, ending next weekend in Petoskey. The Wertz Warriors are a group of about 50 riders and 30 supporting crew members, and since 1982 they've traveled more than a million miles and raised nearly 8 million dollars for Special Olympics.
The Wertz Warriors are also honoring former Detroit Tiger Mark "the Bird" Fidrych, who was an avid supporter of Special Olympics. Fidrych died last April, and this year's ride and the Winter Games will be dedicated to him.
The Special Olympics begin in Grand Traverse County this coming Wednesday, with some events at Schuss Mountain in Antrim County.
