LANSING (AP) -- A solid majority of Michigan school districts say they will support the state's bid to win more federal money for schools.

The Michigan Department of Education says Sunday that a preliminary count indicates it has received memos for Race to the Top funds from 703 local school districts and charter schools. Most were sent in without an endorsement from a union official.

Some of the districts may have been double-counted because memos could have been sent to both the state and intermediate school districts.

Michigan has about 550 school districts and 230 charter schools along with 57 intermediate school districts.

Michigan could win up to $400 million if the state is chosen as one of Race to the Top competition winners.
