An Emmet County man is shot to death and now police are investigating what led up to the crime.
READMOND TOWNSHIP -- It was just before 11 o'clock Sunday night when Michigan State Police received a call for help.
Police say the caller appeared to be intoxicated when he called and then changed his mind and hung up. The call was coming from a home on Island View Road in Readmond Township, just outside of Harbor Springs.
Although the caller said he no longer needed help, troopers and sheriff's deputies were immediately sent out to the home.
"So, what they did was went up to the residence with being accompanied by the Emmet County Sheriff's Department. They did find 24 year old Nicholaus Sowers dead from one gun shot wound to the chest area. The medical examiner was contacted," says Sergeant Jerry Briolat with the Michigan State Police Petoskey Post.
Sergeant Briolat says the victim who is from Readmond Township was an acquaintance of the suspect, a 39 year old Readmond Township man who also owned the home.
"The suspect was found at a neighbor's home, did not offer any resistance, did give himself up and is currently lodged at the Emmet County jail pending charges and arraignment...My understanding is there were at least two others who were witness to this...I believe they have had some pre-lim interviews conducted. It is believed that alcohol had some influence on this matter," says Sergeant Briolat.
As far as what actually led up the crime between the two men, Sergeant Briolat says that's still being investigated.
"I don't know what the altercation was that led up to the crime. Right now that's still being determined based on interviews as to what the motive behind this was," says Sergeant Briolat.
Police say the victim's body was taken to Grand Rapids for an autopsy this afternoon. The suspect is scheduled for arraignment this Wednesday.
