EMPIRE (AP) -- Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is offering snowshoe hikes starting next week.

The first of the hikes is Wednesday afternoon. It starts from the visitor center in Empire.

The National Park Service says it will offer the programs every Saturday and Sunday starting Jan. 2 and continue through the end of February or later as conditions allow.

It says people who don't own snowshoes can reserve and use them free. The hikes are free, but participants must buy a seven-day vehicle pass for $10 or an annual pass for $20.

The park service says participants should be prepared to be outside for about 90 minutes.
