Efforts to change Michigan education law in the hopes of winning more federal money for schools are bogging down at the state Capitol
LANSING (AP) -- Efforts to change Michigan education law in the hopes of winning more federal money for schools are bogging down at the state Capitol.
Democrats who run the House and Republicans who control the Senate hadn't reached agreement Thursday on some of the key changes needed to compete for Race to the Top money from the Obama administration.
Michigan would get up to $400 million if it is selected as one of the competition's winners.
Lawmakers can't agree over how to allow the expansion of charter schools in the state, among other issues.
The Legislature remains in session, but it's unclear if a compromise will be reached. States must apply for Race to the Top money in January.
