Gaylord High School student is killed in weekend accident
OTSEGO COUNTY --
Two school communities have counselors on hand Monday, helping students deal with an accident that claimed the life of a teenager.
16-year-old Levi Coger, was killed Sunday morning while he was being dragged behind a van on an inflatable raft. A 17-year-old from Gaylord was behind the wheel of the vehicle and was using a rope to tow the other teen.
When the van slowed down at a curve, Coger continued along the snowy road into the path of oncoming traffic. The car that hit Coger was driven by a 17-year-old girl from Johannesburg.
Coger was taken to the hospital in Gaylord and then transferred to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland, where he died from his injuries.
State Police say the towing was "reckless and illegal." The case will be reviewed by the County Prosecutor.
Visitation for Levi Coger will take place Thursday from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. His funeral service will take place Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's in Gaylord.
