Michigan lawmakers are continuing their hot pursuit of more federal stimulus cash for schools
LANSING (AP) -- Michigan lawmakers are continuing their hot pursuit of more federal stimulus cash for schools.
A House committee on Thursday approved legislation that would allow the expansion of charter schools in the state. It's one of several bills the full chamber might vote on later in the day.
Other bills would change the way teachers are evaluated and create an alternative path to certification for teachers.
States must apply for Race to the Top money offered by the Obama administration in January. Most states will not win the competition designed to inspire reforms in public schools.
Michigan could get up to $400 million for schools if it is one of the winners.
