The state-appointed financial manager for Detroit's struggling public schools is asking legislators to change state law
LANSING -- The state-appointed financial manager for Detroit's struggling public schools is asking legislators to change state law to improve Michigan's chances to qualify for more federal stimulus money.
Robert Bobb told lawmakers Wednesday that he supports many of the changes they're considering in an attempt to qualify for Race to the Top money.
Bobb is asking the state to include $89 million for Detroit schools in its upcoming application for the money.
Bobb asked the Legislature to clarify state law so he would have clear academic control over the district. That issue is being fought over in court.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm told reporters Wednesday she supports letting a school financial manager such as Bobb also address academics. She added that Detroit schools are in an academic as well as financial emergency.
