Researcher speaks in Detroit on the status of stem cell research

DETROIT -- A leading researcher and director of University of Michigan's A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute will speak in Detroit on the status of stem cell research and its promises of improving health and the economy.

Dr. Eva Feldman speaks to the Detroit Economic Club Tuesday at downtown's Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. Her talk is titled "Stem Cells: The New Frontier of Medical Science."

Feldman is principal investigator for the first human clinical trial of stem cell treatment for the fatal neurodegenerative disorder commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease. Feldman says similar approaches could work for Alzheimer's disease and other ailments.

Michigan voters last year approved a ballot proposal that loosened restrictions on embryonic stem cell research.
