We have been reporting on them for months, those shiny commuter rail cars that showed up one day on tracks near US 31 in Grawn and stayed. Viewers called and wondered what they were doing there. As it turns out, they were just waiting for the day when they would be moved somewhere else. That day has come.
The long lines of former Chicago Metra Passenger cars are gone. So where did they go?
I contacted Great Lakes Central Railroad. They own the cars. They confirmed in a written statement that yes, the cars are gone and that, "The cars have been moved from Grawn to locations closer to our car shops (downstate) for work to be done on them over the next several months. At this time we have no plans to stage railcars at grawn in the foreseeable future. However that could change later depending on the number we have and availability of track space."
