Michigan lawmakers are stepping up their efforts to win extra federal Recovery Act money for state schools
LANSING (AP) -- Michigan lawmakers are stepping up their efforts to win extra federal Recovery Act money for state schools.
The Senate Education Committee has scheduled a Tuesday hearing to discuss legislation that likely would be needed to give the state any chance of winning a portion of the Obama administration's Race to the Top competition.
Michigan could receive up to $400 million in school funding if the state is declared one of the contest winners. States must submit applications for the money in January.
The proposals under consideration could lead to an increase in Michigan's number of charter schools, tie teacher evaluation to student test scores and make other changes.
