Safety Day at local Fire Stations
This past week was fire prevention week - and firefighters say there's no better way to recognize it than by welcoming visitors to the local fire house.
That was true at station number 11 of the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department on Veterans Drive near Traverse City.
There was something for everyone - as kids got to run through an obstacle course ... try on firefighting gear ... even put out a fire with a fire extinguisher simulator. Another popular spot was the smoke house - where kids learn to stay low when trying to get out of the house in case of smoke or fire.
Cherryland Electric was also there to talk about the dangers of power lines - both buried and overhead. The afternoon came to a close with an extrication demonstration. Firefighters and EMTs showed visitors what takes place when emergency responders need to rescue a person who may be trapped inside a car during an accident.
While kids are having fun - there is a message for grownups, too. Firefighters want parents to know what to do in case of a fire, and prepare a home escape plan.
