Shipwreck discoveries in the Great Lakes the focus of summit in Traverse City
TRAVERSE CITY, GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- You can find out more about shipwrecks in the Great Lakes at the 3rd Annual Underwater Summit.
The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve is calling this year's event "Maritime Discoveries in Northwest Michigan."
Steve Libert, who believes he may have found LaSalle's "Le Griffon" is scheduled to be the featured speaker. The Griffon sunk in 1679 and is believed to be the oldest European shipwreck in the Great Lakes. Northwestern Michigan College's Nautical Archaeology Society students will also present their survey projects in the bay. The students surveyed shipwrecks as well as dock and pier structures of historical significance in Grand Traverse Bay.
The Underwater Summit will be held November 7 at the Waterfront Conference Center in Traverse City. For more information call 231-267-9244 or click on the link provided. www.greatlakesexploration.org
