Fundraising for technology at State Theatre
An effort to bring some new technology to the State Theatre in Traverse City is getting some new support.
It's called "MoPix" - a system for the hearing and vision impaired that helps them enjoy movies by using infrared technology to offer closed captioning of movie dialogue, along with narration of the action for those who have trouble seeing the screen.
A fundraising drive began back in May - but now it's getting a new boost, thanks to the support of a local comic artist and author who is selling her book throught the MoPix TC website; along with some good news from the National Institutes of Health. The NIH is now investing millions in research, meaning money raised in northern Michigan can go completely towards bringing the devices to the State Theatre.
It costs about 100 dollars to purchase each set of equipment. It's possible to use the MoPix technology in individual seats from anywhere in the theatre - meaning those who need the visual help or special headphones can use them, and other movie-goers won't be affected.
