Event Raises Money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

TRAVERSE CITY -- Sails were raised on Grand Traverse Bay today, despite the cloudy weather, to support a cause.

The second Leukemia Cup Regatta brought 11 sailors to Grand Traverse Bay to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Organizers say they expect to raise $8,000.

This year's honored hero for the event is 5 year old Ashlyn McFadden.  In 2007, Ashlyn was diagnosed with Leukemia and, after treatment, it went into remission.  Her battle is not over yet, though.  Just recently, Ashlyn was again diagnosed, this time with another form of the disease and is once again undergoing chemotherapy.  The McFadden family says they are honored and thankful for  the support offered through events like these, in which they often participate.

Friday's regatta will be followed by a dinner and silent auction on Saturday, July 4th at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club.  Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dinner begins at 7 p.m.  Admission is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and under.
