The cooler than usual weather is bringing in shoppers on Front Street but keeping golfers off the greens.
TRAVERSE CITY -- Over the past few days, it's gone from hot and humid to downright cool and rainy. But according to some Traverse City shops that's not a bad thing.
"A rainy day certainly keeps people off the beach and hopefully come downtown shopping," says Cherry Stop owner, Jamie Roster.
Shopping is exactly what people are doing at the Cherry Stop on Front Street. Crowds are avoiding Mother Nature and instead making purchases.
"From a business perspective it is positive...although nobody likes to see a rainy day," says Roster.
Just down the street at Kay's Unique Apparel it's a similar situation with tourists and locals stopping in.
"We feel that the rainy weather has helped us a bit because obviously people can't be out on the golf courses or beaches. So we're happy from that standpoint....I would say two thirds are from out of town and a third local. We've had a lot of visitors," says owner Kay Jerome
So, the rainy weather seems to be positive thing for local shops but what about golf courses? Well, that's a different story.
The general manager of Bay Meadows Golf Course says instead of golfers scheduling tee times, it's cancellations that have phones ringing.
"With the heat last week we did loose a few players....As far as the rain goes it's been incredible," says general manager Rodger Jabara.
It's these conditions that are keeping golfers off the greens.
"It might be 75 and wet and people can put up with that but they can't put up with wet and cold and that's what we're seeing," says Jabara.
Although the weather might hurt business, staff at Elmbrook Golf Course say there is a silver lining.
"The rain might be you a little damp at times, in our case we look at it as a favorable thing simply because it lets us present the best product possible....I think as soon as the rain stops I think the pent up desire for golf comes out...the sun comes out and here they come," says Elmbrook staff member, Roger Putman.
The cooler weather could also be having effects on area hotels. 7&4 News spoke with several hotels in Traverse City. Half of them had at least half a dozen rooms available for the next two weekends.
