Park opens after environmental clean-up
An Emmet County park re-opened more than four years after it was shut down due to health concerns.
Resort Township's East Park on Little Traverse Bay was shut down after contamination was discovered from what was an abandoned cement plant. Cement kiln dust contaminated the area, and after the contamination was discovered, the park was forced to close.
CMS Land Company was charged with the task of restoring the park back to its natural atmosphere. In all, CMS says they put $400,000 dollars into the park project.
To honor the newly re-opened park, the public along with state, federal and community leaders came out to a celebration on Saturday.
While the public is allowed to go for a swim in the water, the health department says - as a *precaution - swimmers are encouraged to rinse off after going into the lake - and the park will have a spray area for people to do just that.
