Ag businesses getting ready for busy season
It's no secret that Michigan's economy is struggling, with some of the worst unemployment numbers in the nation.
But the growing season is here and that means agricultural businesses are getting ready for picking fruit - and picking new employees. Cherry Growers - a fruit processor in Grawn - is among the businesses that will be looking for new hires at the upcoming job fair. Company spokesman Tom Spencer says they'll be hiring hundreds of workers for several different kinds of positions.
State lawmakers from the Grand Traverse region are sponsoring the job fair, along with Northwest Michigan Works and the local Council of Governments. Traverse City State Representative Wayne Schmidt says it's a great opportunity for those looking for work - and for the businesses looking for workers. In all, organizers say there should be 600 job openings, for both seasonal and full-time positions. Not all will require previous experience.
Anyone with questions about how temporary or seasonal positions could affect their unemployment benefits can meet with Michigan Works! at the job fair.
The Agricultural Jobs Fair takes place this coming Monday, from 10 a.m. to noon. It will be held on the Park Place Hotel, on State and Park Streets in Traverse City.
