It's the first annual "Heroes Weekend" in Manistee County, honoring local heroes as part of the Memorial Day holiday.
MANISTEE COUNTY -- It's organizations like the Manistee County Mounted Search & Rescue Patrol that provide local services to the area. So, as part of the Memorial weekend holiday, the first annual "Heroes Weekend" in Manistee County, is taking the time to recognize these local heroes and their efforts.
"We're just glad we can volunteer our time in this day and age," says Manistee County Mounted Search & Rescue Patrol team leader, Renia Kuenzer.
The Mounted Search & Rescue teams presented demonstrations with the horses and riders to let people see how the teams train for specific services including crowd control techniques.
"It's just an honor to be able to do a demonstration....People don't realize the time that we put in or the volunteering," says Kuenzer.
Just down the road in Manistee, the city fire department was also taking part in the weekend event.
The historic fire station was open to the public for tours. Fire fighters explained the history behind the department and their daily work routines.
"Getting the people in the station gets them to talk to us one on one. We get a better feel for what the public sees in us and we also get to see how they feel about us as well," says fire captain, Doug Dominick.
Although the memorial weekend takes the time to honor local heroes like law enforcement and rescue teams, captain Dominick says it's all just part of the job.
"We're seen as heroes, we really don't fee like we're heroes. We're here doing our job. We have a job we're paid to do and most of the time that's exactly what we're doing, doing what we're trained to do. So the heroic side of it just comes as a sideline to what we do," says Captain Dominick.
