A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Traverse City rescues a family from their flooded home in North Dakota.

Residents and volunteers from hundreds of miles away have struggled for days trying to hold off the bulging Red River.

About 17-hundred families have been forced to move to higher ground.

The Coast Guard crew rescued four adults and child and an infant from their home in Abercrombie North Dakota Wednesday afternoon.

The residents had to be hoisted up into the helicopter after they became trapped in their home by the flood waters.

LTJG Christopher Yane from Air Station Traverse told 7&4 News why they sent crews to North Dakota. "The helicopter is the only means that they can be rescued safely so the helicopter crew launched in pretty nasty weather conditions winds that were over 20 miles an hour and blowing snow to get to this family and they safely rescued four adults one child and one infant and also two family dogs."

The crew from Air Station Traverse City is one of several Coast Guard crews that have been called to respond to the Red River flooding.

The National Weather Service has amended its forecast for the Red River in Fargo, now officially putting the level at 41 feet, a level that's never been seen before.
