Traverse City Light and Power is cancelling its "Green Rate" charge.

The additional charge was on a volunteer basis to help defray the cost of building and operating the utility's wind turbine located on M-72.

TCLP was the first utility in the country to come up with the "Green Rate" concept and program.

Cancelling the charge will impact 73 residents and 10 commercial customers.

Officials say a separate charge is no longer needed since the utility's plan now calls for generating 30 percent of power through renewable resources by 2020.

This means essentially every costumers rates support renewable energy.
