Leelanau County Hardest Hit with Heavy Snow
GLEN ARBOR -- Snow began accumulating around northern Michigan late Sunday afternoon and by sunrise, the storm was over, leaving a swath of heavy snow in it's wake. The Upper Peninsula and northern Emmet county only had two or three inches to shovel this morning, but in Leelanau county, residents were clearing 9 to 20 or more inches of wet snow from roads, cars, and driveways.
The snow fell at rates between one and two inches per hour during the evening and gusty winds added to low visibilities by creating snow drifts. Law enforcement encouraged motorists to stay off the roads in Alpena, Wexford, and Leelanau counties during the night. Within six hours, much of Leelanau county received between one and two feet of snow.
Heavy, wet snow accumulated on wires and snapped tree branches in Leelanau county, leaving Glen Arbor residents without electricity for most of the night. Power was restored early Monday morning.
Besides digging out of the snow this morning, many residents took the opportunity to walk around town and take pictures of the snowy landscape. "I think it's beautiful," says Glen Arbor resident Herb Scaer. "It's nice walking downtown. I got a chance to take some pictures and listen to the birds. It's a good morning."
