Greenhouse Gas Emissions Tracked to Create an Energy Profile

TRAVERSE CITY -- SEEDS, a non-profit ecological research, education, and design organization, is unveiling the results of a greenhouse gas emission study in Grand Traverse County in a forum at the Traverse City Library.

The study was initiated in 2007 when a group of citizens petitioned Traverse City government to sign on to the mayors' climate agreement.  The first phase of that agreement is to conduct a survey of greenhouse emissions.  The goal is to bring greenhouse gas emissions down to 1990 levels or lower by 2012.

SEEDS collected data on the amount and type of carbon-emitting sources in Grand Traverse County.  The results offer a snapshot of energy usage, showing how residents, businesses, agriculture, transportation and waste contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

Thursday night's forum will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the county's current emissions and discuss ways to reduce the impact.

SEEDS plans to monitor future greenhouse gas emissions and track changes that will be made in Grand Traverse County in the coming years.
