Friends of the Jordan River Watershed, Power Coalition Met with Concerned Residents

TRAVERSE CITY -- Friends of the Jordan River Watershed and the POWER (Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources) Coalition opened a discussion with concerned residents at the State Theater this morning.

The hot topic is a proposed injection well in Alba and the disposal of cement kiln dust from Bay Harbor.

Presenters included Dr. John Richter from Friends of the Jordan River Watershed and Dr. Edward Timm, a chemical engineer who once worked for Dow Chemicals.

Dr. Timm began the meeting with background information on the issue and the scope of the potential environmental problems involved.

Dr. Richter discussed the role of grassroots organizations in finding solutions to environmental issues.

Members of the Friends of the Jordan River Watershed are against the proposed injection well and are seeking an alternative solution to cleaning up the cement kiln dust at Bay Harbor.

JoAnne Beemon, a member of the organization, hopes the meeting will not only inform the public, but encourage people to take action by writing to the Governor, EPA, and DEQ and voicing their concerns.
