The Traverse City Area Public School district cleans classrooms on a regular basis in order to keep students healthy.

TRAVERSE CITY -- It's about keeping up with disinfecting, in order to keep germs and the flu down.

That's the idea at Willow Hill Elementary and all of the schools in the Traverse City District.

"We do most of our cleaning when students and staff go home at night.  That's when our custodial maintenance staff cleans the facility and they do an in depth job, top to bottom going through each of the classrooms," says TCAPS director of buildings and grounds, Adam BeVier.

This job isn't your typical "spring cleaning."  BeVier says it happens Monday through Friday when students and staff leave the buildings.

"We take care of the restroom facilities and dust and clean the hallways, all the public areas, open common areas and clean the floors.  In the classrooms we wipe the desks, chairs and table tops all down and then clean the floor as well," says BeVier.

"Has TCAPS always been this serious about cleaning, if this something new?" asks 7&4 News.

"TCAPS has always dedicated their resources to providing a safe and clean environment...I don't think we change our operation.  It's pretty consistent whether its summertime or winter time.  We have to clean each and every space every night, every week of the school year," says BeVier.

Besides the nightly cleaning procedures, all of the TCAPS classrooms and the cafeterias have hand sanitizer to help keep things germ and flu free.

"The kids go out to the playground and play and when they come in from the playground instead of having each and every one of the students go into the restroom they can use the hand sanitizer," says BeVier.

BeVier says every Traverse City school keeps a staff member on call during school hours, to take care of any spills or if students get sick.
