Drain Commissioner says his job isn't necessary
CHEBOYGAN COUNTY -- A northern Michigan drain commissioner wants to lose his job - and he's hoping the county will take the first step in firing him. Newly-elected Cheboygan County Drain Commissioner Dennis Lennox says his county has little need for the position, and he says because of the county's topography and geography, the county no longer has any legal drains.
In his words, "there's nothing for the drain commissioner to do except waste taxpayer money." Lennox says state law requires the position in counties with a population over 12-thousand people, but he'd like Cheboygan County Commissioners to pass a resolution eliminating the position. That resolution would then go to Lansing where state legislators could pass a law amending the population requirements.
Smaller counties can turn over responsibilities of the office to the local road commissions. Lennox says at least in his county - with no drains to manage - it's an unnecessary expense, and he'll make his appeal to the county board during a meeting on Wednesday morning.
