The sooner you file, the sooner you may get that refund
This month is one of the busiest times for tax preparers. As most people have received their W-2 forms from their employers, many are anxious to file their returns - and hopefully - collect a refund. This year, with the economy taking its toll, some people are in more of a hurry than ever.
Employees at Jackson Hewitt Tax Preparation in Traverse City say they're serving more people who have unemployment income. But that's also taxable income, so what effect it has on your tax refund may depend on how much you had deducted from unemployment checks. But Ralph Cordes says it's not just the unemployed that are having a tough time - he says many people are coming in early, hoping to get that tax refund sooner rather than later.
Cordes says February is one of the busiest months for filing tax returns. If you want help with your taxes and want to avoid the rush, he says things slow down during the last week of February and the month of March.
