Mailboxes will not be repaired/replaced - the same as all other items placed in the right-of-way without a permit.
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- Citing a 1969 Public Act the Grand Traverse Road Commission announced Monday it would no longer pay for damage to mailboxes hit by plows.
Public Act 200 states that work performed and items placed in the road right-of-way are to be done so under the condition of permit.
Since most homeowners frequently place items in the right-of-way (sod, irrigation systems, decorative items and mailboxes) they do so at their own risk.
Road Commission Manager Mary Gillis says "Under our old policy an exception was made for damaged mailboxes when they were physically hit by our maintenance equipment, not from snow or ice damage. Now, mailboxes will not be repaired/replaced - the same as all other items placed in the right-of-way without a permit."
This change was done as part of cost saving measures being reviewed and followed at the Road Commission.
