The city of Cadillac put out a schedule of how construction will effect residents this spring.

The City of Cadillac and MDOT released a tentative 2009 reconstruction schedule for the Mitchell Street Improvement Project.  Project improvements begin in April 2009 and are scheduled to be completed at the end of September 2009.

The Mitchell Street Improvement Project brings great changes to the City of Cadillac’s Mitchell Street.  The project entails pavement replacement, railroad crossing replacement, partial sidewalk and curb replacement, downtown aesthetic enhancements, and partial sanitary sewer replacement.

A goal of this project is to always keep Mitchell Street open, with the exception of a month-long period in April. A minimum of one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.  The parking lane on one side of Mitchell will remain open at all times.  Other parking is available through city parking lots and many businesses are opening their backdoors for people to cut through to Mitchell Street.

Tentative schedule:

Phase 1: April 6-May 6, 2009

  • Mitchell Street detoured from Granite to Chapin. All through traffic will be directed to Lake Street, local traffic will be permitted on Mitchell Street for business access.
  • Railroad crossing reconstruction and sewer replacement.

Phase 2: May 6-mid-August

  • One driving lane in one direction open and 2 driving lanes plus the parking lane in the other direction will be open in downtown.  Construction will take place on the other lanes.  This will flip-flop as necessary until all lanes are addressed.
  • Downtown road, sidewalk, and curb replacement.

Phase 3: Mid-august-early September

  • Final asphalt on the entire project.
  • Lane closures will be changing daily, log onto www.downtowncadillac.com for daily changes.

Phase 4: early September

  • Install new traffic signals and build brick paver crosswalks across side streets.
  • Project completion.

Delays in completing this project in September 2009 may be caused by utility conflicts, weather delays, and special material availability.  For more information please log onto www.downtowncadillac.com.
