Prosecutors in Lansing have dropped a murder case against a man who they believed killed his wife back in 1968. Charles Mercer was charged in 2006 with the murder of his wife Sally Mercer. Police at first believed that Sally died from bulbar polio, but a cold case investigation lead them to believe she actually died of a massive dose of painkillers. A friend of the deceased woman had testified that Charles wanted a divorce and had threatened to kill his wife and their then two-year-old daughter. In August an Ingham County Circuit Judge ruled there was no evidence a crime was committed. Tuesday prosecutors said they would no longer look into the case.
