The Impact Database, which tracks sales of spirits, expects champagne sales to be down from one to four percent this year from 900 million glasses last year. Impact's Research Director says people are looking for value, and luxury items are getting hurt. So champagne makers are going after consumer dollars with new ads, gift boxes and box sets of famed highbrow brands like Dom Perignon. And consumers can expect price breaks on downstream brands in order to spur sales.
