ST. PAUL, MINN. (AP) -- The state board examining disputed ballots in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race is close to wrapping up its decisions on challenges. But a ruling by the state's Supreme Court means there'll likely be no winner before the new year.
The court has ruled that improperly rejected absentee ballots be included in the state's recount.
As of Thursday, Republican incumbent Norm Coleman saw his lead shrink from 360 votes to just two, as most challenges were rejected. That's down from the 215-vote lead he had over Democrat Al Franken after the initial tally on election day.
The Canvassing Board hopes to finish ruling Friday on the remaining challenges to disputed ballots.
The final outcome of the recount will also depend on some 5,000 withdrawn challenges that have not yet been allocated to the candidates.
