State highway and transportation officials along with groups of bicycle enthusiasts have approved plans to create U.S. road maps with more than 50,000 miles of bicycle friendly routes. The routes will consider traffic volume and connect byways, cities, and already established transcontinental bicycle routes. Each state is responsible for setting up its own routes and putting up signs.
