With all of the snow we have right now, and more on the way, it can be hard keeping up with keeping your own property cleared. But if you don't it, and don't do it right, it could cost you. That's the subject of this Fact Finder Report.

Let's start with the biggest project, your driveway. You may not know where to put all of that snow, but don't put it in the street! There is a state code that prohibits you from putting any snow ice or slush on any road or highway, including the shoulder and right of way area. If you do, you could be charged with a misdemeanor, face 90 days in jail, a $100 fine, and cleanup costs. And if some one is injured because of snow you put in the street, you could be held liable!

When it comes to keeping fire hydrants clear, the Traverse City Fire Marshall says you are not required to dig them out, but it can save firefighters precious time when are in your neighborhood, or even at your house fighting a fire. He suggests every time you clear your driveway, also clear six feet from the center of the hydrant and clear a path to it.

Your mailbox may be the last thing on your mind after spending time shoveling, but you want to keep that accessible too. The Traverse City Postmaster says make sure your sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Also make sure there are no big piles of snow by your mailbox and that the numbers are visible. Carriers can put your mail delivery on hold if they can't safely get to your mailbox.

Everyone I spoke with says they are willing to work with you and will try to be flexible, but they have these measures in place just in case they need to use them.
