Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm plans to propose $140 million in state government spending cuts
(AP) -- A newspaper reports Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm plans to propose $140 million in state government spending cuts, including the closure of a state prison and a prison camp. The Detroit Free Press, citing a copy of the plan it says it obtained, reports the prison facilities aren't named, but that the closure would save $21 million. It says reductions in welfare payments would save $60 million. The Democratic governor's budget director is expected to unveil spending reductions at noon Wednesday. Legislators could approve cuts later in the day. K-12 schools will avoid losing money for now under Granholm's executive order. The cuts would address at least half the state's $240 million deficit in the budget year that began two months ago.
