Zeeland's Gentex Corporation announced Friday that they will be laying off 350 to 400 workers. This is the first time in the companies 34 year history that they have every laid anyone off permanently. Officials say the rapid decent in car and truck sales spurred the auto supplier in October to eliminate its entire contract workforce. That was followed by the cut of a third shift, voluntary layoffs and shutdowns the week of Thanksgiving. But now officials say those cutbacks aren't enough. Gentex employs more than 2,500 workers, Zeeland's largest employer.
